A new era for Polk State basketball
Marreese Speights, a former NBA forward who spent a decade playing for franchises including the Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies and Golden State Warriors, has been appointed head coach of Polk State College in Florida. His hiring was announced ahead of the June 1 start date, marking the next step in a coaching career that has already seen him serve as Director of Player Development at the University of South Florida and lead the postgraduate program at his Speights Academy in St. Petersburg.
Speights’ basketball résumé includes a national championship as a sophomore at the University of Florida, where he led the Gators in rebounds, blocks and field‑goal percentage while averaging 14.5 points per game. The 2008 first‑round pick (16th overall) went on to win an NBA title with the Golden State Warriors in 2015, a season in which the team set a record with 73 regular‑season victories.
During his NBA tenure he worked under coaches such as Billy Donovan, Mark Jackson and Steve Kerr, experiences that have shaped his approach to player development. Speights now wants to translate that grit and toughness into a program that emphasizes hard work, high character and pride in representing Polk State.
The new coach holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Union Institute in Ohio and has previously guided the Northside Christian School boys program to the 2A state semifinals. He will look to build a team that competes fiercely while upholding the college’s standards on and off the court.
Polk State College, a public institution with a growing athletic profile, will benefit from Speights’ blend of professional pedigree and grassroots coaching experience. His vision aligns with the college’s ambition to field a competitive, character‑driven squad that reflects the community it serves.
