A New Chapter for the Union
Ryan Richter, a former La Salle men's soccer standout and longtime member of the Philadelphia Union’s technical staff, has been named interim head coach of the MLS franchise. The appointment comes as the club seeks stability and direction amid a period of transition.
Richter’s journey to the interim role is rooted in a deep connection to the organization. After being drafted by the Union in 2011, he spent seven years playing professionally before returning to Philadelphia to contribute to the club’s development programs.
From Player to Coach: A Developmental Path
His coaching résumé includes a stint as assistant head coach from 2022 to 2024 and a recent appointment as head coach of Philadelphia Union II in January 2025. In that capacity, he guided the reserve side through a competitive season, honing talent that could soon feature in the first team.
Beyond his playing and coaching credentials, Richter brings a student‑athlete pedigree that includes multiple Atlantic 10 honors, a Hall of Athletes induction in 2024, and a record of 28 career goals at La Salle. Those achievements underscore a blend of on‑field skill and leadership that the Union hopes will translate into a positive influence on the senior squad.
Club officials have expressed confidence that Richter’s familiarity with the organization’s culture and his proven ability to develop young players will provide a steady hand while the search for a permanent head coach continues. The interim period is expected to be marked by a focus on tactical cohesion and community engagement.
