A Global Opportunity for the Hoosiers
Indiana University’s men’s basketball program is set to embark on an unprecedented journey to Peru, where the team will compete in the FISU America Games. The trip, scheduled for later this month, is seen as a catalyst for building chemistry and accelerating development under second‑year head coach Darian DeVries.
DeVries emphasized that the extra days on the court, combined with the unique cultural experience, will give the squad a chance to fine‑tune systems that were still a work in progress a season ago. After finishing 18‑14 last year, the Hoosiers are eager to translate the additional practice time into tangible results on the hardwood.
Roster Revitalization and New Faces
The roster has been reshaped with a wave of transfers and fresh talent. Among the newcomers are Aiden Sherrell, Markus Burton, Samet Yigitoglu, Prince‑Alexander Moody, Vaughn Karvala, Trevor Manhertz and Clemens Sokolov, each bringing a different skill set to the mix. The team also welcomes four incoming freshmen, a group that DeVries believes will help stabilize the program and reduce turnover.
High‑profile non‑conference matchups against Syracuse, Kentucky, Alabama, Notre Dame and SMU punctuate the schedule, offering the Hoosiers a chance to test themselves against elite competition early in the season. These games, alongside the Peru experience, are designed to sharpen the team’s resolve before conference play begins.
A Broader Landscape
The NCAA tournament will expand to 76 teams beginning next March, a change that DeVries says adds excitement and a sense of possibility for his program. He also noted the passion of the fan base, which he described as a driving force behind the team’s ambitions.
Recruiting remains a cornerstone of the rebuild, with the coaching staff focusing on high‑school prospects to complement the transfer market. At the same time, DeVries confirmed that he will not be coaching his son, Tucker DeVries, this season as the younger DeVries pursues professional opportunities.
The upcoming Peru trip is more than a travel itinerary; it is a strategic pause that could define the trajectory of Indiana’s basketball resurgence. With a blend of experienced returnees, impactful transfers, and fresh legs, the Hoosiers hope to turn the lessons learned abroad into a competitive edge when the regular season tips off.
