The University at Albany announced that Philip Flory has been hired as Assistant Coach/Operations/Movement & Shooting Specialist for the Great Danes women’s basketball team. The appointment brings a blend of on‑court instruction, logistical oversight, and specialized skill development under one roof.
Flory arrives after a professional playing career that spanned stints with the Syracuse Stallions, Albany Patroons and Montreal Tundra, and after being selected in the 2022 NBA G‑League Draft by the OKC Blue. His collegiate experience includes standout seasons at the University of Wisconsin‑Stevens Point, where he earned First Team All‑WIAC honors, and at Seton Hall, where he was named to the Big East All‑Academic team.
Beyond the court, Flory founded Philip Flory Training in 2019, a platform that offers camps, clinics and individualized skill sessions aimed at elevating player performance. The venture reflects his commitment to systematic movement training and shooting mechanics, concepts he will now integrate into the university’s program.
Operational expertise and player development
During his tenure as Director of Operations for the men’s basketball team at UAlbany, Flory managed practice schedules, travel logistics and recruiting coordination, ensuring that the program ran smoothly off the court. He also played a hands‑on role in player development, designing workouts and skill sessions that targeted both physical conditioning and technical refinement.
A strategic fit for the program
Athletic director Kelly Morrone highlighted the multifaceted nature of the new role, noting that Flory’s background aligns perfectly with the program’s goals of enhancing performance while streamlining operations. “Philip’s experience as both a player and a developer gives us a unique perspective that will benefit our student‑athletes on and off the court,” Morrone said.
Looking ahead, Flory will begin shaping the team’s movement curriculum and shooting protocols while also overseeing day‑to‑day operations that keep the program competitive. His appointment underscores the university’s commitment to integrating performance science with practical coaching, a strategy that could position the Great Danes for sustained growth in the highly competitive America East Conference.
