Eddie Nuñez, the athletic director at the University of Houston, has come forward to clarify the school's commitment to its baseball program, emphasizing that the current scholarship levels and revenue‑sharing arrangements are on par with those of many of its Big 12 peers.
A Program at a Crossroads
The recent decision not to renew Todd Whitting’s contract marks the end of a 16‑year tenure and signals a shift in the program’s leadership, a move that Nuñez says reflects the administration’s willingness to evaluate performance while also opening the door for fresh direction.
With the appointment of Will Davis, formerly of Lamar, as the new head coach, expectations are rising that the program will benefit from renewed energy and strategic vision, a prospect that Nuñez believes will accelerate the program’s development.
Investing in the Future
Nuñez has outlined a roadmap that includes expanding the number of athletic scholarships from the current 15 to a figure closer to the conference average of roughly 30, and increasing financial support for the team’s revenue‑share model, underscoring the need for sustained fundraising efforts.
While acknowledging that Houston already fields a competitive baseball squad, Nuñez stressed that the university will never be satisfied with the status quo, pledging continued investment to push the program toward even greater achievements.
