A New Era for Women's Pro Hockey
The Professional Women's Hockey League is set to broaden its footprint for the 2026‑27 season, adding franchises in Las Vegas and Hamilton, Ontario. The move follows a period of rapid growth and heightened interest in the league, which has already proven its ability to draw capacity crowds.
Las Vegas will host its team at the T‑Mobile Arena, the same venue that houses the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights. The arena’s state‑of‑the‑art facilities and central location are expected to provide an ideal backdrop for the franchise’s debut. Meanwhile, Hamilton’s club will call the recently renovated TD Coliseum home, a 16,012‑seat arena that previously hosted a neutral‑site game that attracted a sold‑out crowd.
Both cities represent the second wave of expansion for the PWHL, building on the initial rollout that introduced Detroit as a hub. The league’s single‑entity ownership model will continue to guide operations, ensuring stability while allowing each market to develop its own identity. Hamilton’s team colors — gold, maroon and cream — will contrast with the Las Vegas franchise’s green and gold palette, adding visual variety to the league’s branding.
The expansion is not just a geographic story but also a cultural one. In Nevada, youth hockey participation has surged by 600 percent since the Golden Knights entered the NHL in 2017, a trend the PWHL hopes to tap into. Ticket sales data from Hamilton’s “Takeover Tour” indicate that more than 70 percent of buyers were first‑time PWHL attendees, underscoring the league’s growing appeal to new fans.
With both markets demonstrating strong support and the league’s proven ability to host successful events, the upcoming season promises to cement the PWHL’s status as a premier destination for women’s professional hockey.
