Deputy’s Taser Use Sparks Assault Charge After High School Baseball Game

A South Carolina deputy’s confrontation with a teenage player and the player’s mother led to multiple arrests and an external investigation.

A video that quickly circulated online shows a tense encounter between a South Carolina sheriff's deputy and a teenage baseball player that unfolded moments after a high school game.

A confrontation captured on video

The footage, recorded at a field in Marion County, depicts Deputy George Edwin Page confronting the 17‑year‑old athlete after the game between Pee Dee Academy and Lee Academy.

According to the deputy’s report, he instructed the player’s mother, Kathryn Atkinson, to leave the premises after she attempted to speak with the umpire, a request she declined.

Atkinson later disobeyed a lawful order from Page, leading to her own charge of breach of peace, while the teen was seen stepping on the deputy’s foot with a cleat before a brief struggle ensued.

Escalation and arrest

During the scuffle, the deputy drew his Taser and struck the teenager in the side of the head before guiding him to the ground, an action that was later described as excessive by several observers.

The scuffle resulted in the arrest of two additional individuals: 24‑year‑old Austin Bowers, who was charged with disorderly conduct, and the teenage player, who now faces a disorderly conduct charge through the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

Both Page and Atkinson were booked at the Marion County Detention Center, where they remain pending further court proceedings.

Investigation and institutional response

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to review Deputy Page’s conduct, citing multiple complaints about his actions on the field.

In a brief statement, Lee Academy acknowledged the existence of the footage but said it could not comment further while the investigation remains ongoing.

The incident has reignited discussions about the interaction between law‑enforcement personnel and high‑school athletes, particularly in the context of sports‑related disputes.
