Nick Painter has been named the new head coach of the Effingham High School boys basketball program, taking over a team that has been rebuilding over the past few seasons. The school board announced the appointment this week, highlighting Painter’s deep roots in the community and his proven track record as a player and mentor.
A Homegrown Coach Returns
A 2012 graduate of Flora High School, Painter excelled on the court and the baseball diamond, also competing in track before moving on to collegiate basketball at Lincoln Trail College and later Marian University, where he balanced his studies with a dual‑sport career.
After completing his education, Painter began his coaching journey in 2021 with the Indiana Elite Blaze, a competitive club program, and subsequently served as an assistant at Edgewood High School. In 2022 he returned to Effingham to launch a basketball skill‑training business, a venture that sharpened his ability to develop individual talent while maintaining a disciplined environment.
Painter is married to Astrid, and the couple recently welcomed their newborn son, Julian. His family ties extend to his mother, step‑dad John Winters, and siblings who live in both Flora and Bloomfield, Indiana, providing a supportive network as he steps into the new role.
Central to Painter’s philosophy is a tough, defense‑first style that emphasizes rebounding and disciplined execution. He believes that a strong defensive foundation will enable the team to compete consistently and develop character off the court.
