Kolbi Ferguson, once a standout on the high school gridiron, has swapped the roar of the stadium for the clank of steel plates. He played football since he was four, earned player‑of‑the‑year honors, and later competed at Mars Hill University before moving to The Citadel.
A New Chapter in the Gym
Earlier this week he met with Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jack Cochrane for a joint workout, a session that highlighted the crossover appeal of his athletic background. The meeting was part of the Athlete Identification & Recruitment Initiative, a USA Weightlifting program designed to spot exceptional athletes from non‑weightlifting sports.
At the 2026 Senior Pan American Championships in Panama City, Ferguson placed second in his weight class, marking his 12th competition and underscoring rapid progress. He now measures success in tiny increments — adding a kilo to his lift or shaving a fraction of a second off his technique.
Reflecting on his journey, Ferguson says he aims to improve by 1% or one kilo at a time toward his Olympic dream. His positive mindset and disciplined approach have turned a late‑start in weightlifting into a serious medal contender.
The Path Forward
With the 2028 Olympics on the horizon, Ferguson remains focused on continuous improvement, aiming to translate his football discipline into weightlifting excellence. The next phase of his journey will be closely watched by coaches, teammates, and the broader sports community.
