A standout week for the Bearcats
Zach Cowart, a junior outfielder for Lander, was crowned the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Southeast Region Player of the Week, marking the first such honor of his collegiate career.
During the past seven days he batted a perfect .500, launching a home run in each of three games. His long balls proved decisive, including a leadoff solo shot against Columbus State and two go‑ahead two‑run homers that swung tight contests against North Georgia.
From conference dominance to national competition
The Bearcats captured their second consecutive Peach Belt Conference Tournament title, with Cowart’s bat driving crucial rallies. His ninth‑inning blast gave Lander a 6‑4 lead over North Georgia, and a subsequent two‑run homer turned a 6‑6 tie into an 8‑6 victory.
Now the team prepares to open the NCAA Southeast Regional against North Greenville, a matchup that will test the Bearcats’ momentum as they aim to extend their season.
Coach Grant Sherrod and teammate Connor Droze have both praised Cowart’s leadership, noting that his confidence at the plate has inspired the entire lineup.
