Southside Christian’s baseball squad captured its fifth straight South Carolina Independent School League championship on Thursday, outlasting Oceanside Collegiate 8-7 in a dramatic comeback that left the crowd roaring.
The Sabres appeared down early, but a two-run single by senior CJ Aubuchon in the sixth inning flipped the lead, and the team added three runs in that same frame to seize control. Carson Bolemon, a top MLB draft prospect, had earlier trimmed the deficit with a two-run homer in the third, while reliever Will Fulcher shut down the opposition with three hitless innings.
Coach Scott Freeman’s Reflection
Coach Scott Freeman praised the team’s resilience, noting that each championship has brought its own set of challenges and rewards, and that the players’ character has been the foundation of their sustained success.
The victory also marks only the third time in SCHSL history that a program has won five or more consecutive state titles, placing Southside Christian in an elite group that includes the 2002 squad that also featured Jacob Wiggs, who sealed the win with a perfect seventh inning.
Fans and alumni gathered on the field after the final out, celebrating a legacy that blends tradition with a relentless pursuit of excellence, while the organization looks ahead to defending the crown next season.
