Scott Tassone, a physical education teacher at Oakstead Elementary School in Land O’ Lakes, Florida, was recently honored with the 2026 NHL Future Goals Most Valuable Teacher award, a distinction that celebrates educators who blend a love of hockey with community service.
A Lifetime in the Classroom and on the Ice
Having spent 28 years shaping young minds, Tassone has called Oakstead Elementary home for the past 18 years, where his students are affectionately known as the ‘Lightning learners’ and where he has cultivated a lasting enthusiasm for the sport.
Community Outreach Through Ball Hockey
Before the school day begins, Tassone runs ball‑hockey practices that have doubled in participation over the years, coaching teams that include his own son, Tucker, who played the game through high school.
Fundraising for a Cause
In 2022 he organized the Mason Fox Ball Hockey Tournament, a charity event that generated $7,000 in its inaugural year and $10,000 the following year, proceeds of which were donated to the Smile Like Mason Foundation to combat pediatric cancer.
The tournament’s success was bolstered by equipment donations and promotional support from the Tampa Bay Lightning, the NHL franchise that also nominated Tassone for the award through its community development manager, Jordan McKenzie.
Personal Connections and Future Plans
Beyond the classroom, Tassone’s efforts have been recognized by colleagues such as Russell Albanese and Hailey Caliendo, and even former NHL player Darcy Tucker, who have praised his humor and dedication. He recently received two tickets to an NHL event and plans to attend the 2027 Discover Winter Classic with his son, Tucker, before retiring after eight more years of teaching.
