Shoreham-Wading River Secures Suffolk County Crown
The Shoreham-Wading River girls flag football team captured the Suffolk County Class C championship on Thursday, routing Kings Park 34-0 in a game that showcased a relentless defense and an explosive offense.
Defensive Mastery Sets the Pace
From the opening drive, the SWR defense forced a three-and-out, limiting the Knights to a single first down before the Wildcats struck first. The early stop set the tone for a game that would see the Wildcats dominate possession and field position.
Junior quarterback Shealyn Varbero opened the scoring with a rushing touchdown and later added two interceptions, showcasing her dual-threat ability. Senior standout Mia Mangano led all receivers with four touchdowns and nine flag pulls, anchoring a balanced attack that kept the opposition guessing.
The victory not only secured the county title but also earned the Wildcats a berth in the Long Island Championship, where they will meet Nassau County Class C champion Cold Spring Harbor in a highly anticipated showdown. Both teams bring unbeaten records and a fierce rivalry that promises another high‑scoring affair.
Head coach Bob DeSilva praised his squad’s execution, noting that the team’s discipline and chemistry were evident throughout the contest. "We executed exactly what we practiced, and the girls played with heart," DeSilva said, adding that the upcoming championship will test the Wildcats’ depth and resilience.
