Williamson County officials announced a partnership with the Lonestar Soccer Club to replace the natural grass at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park with a FIFA‑certified synthetic turf system.
The initiative, originally projected at almost $9 million, saw bids converge at $6.3 million, allowing the county to allocate $300,000 toward an eight‑lane running track while the soccer club shoulders the bulk of the turf expense.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
Beyond the capital outlay, the new surface is projected to trim annual maintenance costs by roughly $100,000, freeing funds for other community needs. The durable material also enables year‑round training, a crucial advantage during Central Texas’ rainy spring.
Local coaches note that, in previous seasons, nearly one‑third of practice sessions and matches were postponed due to soggy fields, disrupting the development of thousands of youth players. With the synthetic pitch ready by early January, those disruptions are expected to vanish.
The installation will be completed around the first of the year, positioning the park to host the upcoming spring soccer season on pristine, consistent playing conditions.
