Davion Thompson, a 6‑foot‑2 guard from the 2027 class, has emerged as one of the most coveted prospects in high school basketball.
After a series of impressive showings with Team USA, where he outplayed many of the nation’s top guards, Thompson narrowed his college choices to Vanderbilt, Baylor, Arkansas and Michigan.
A Coach Known for Guard Development
Vanderbilt head coach Mark Byington brings a proven record of shaping scoring guards, having previously mentored players such as Tyler Tanner, Jason Edwards and Duke Miles.
During a recent official visit on May 3, Thompson experienced the campus atmosphere and the program’s vision, a factor that left a strong impression on him.
His performance in the Nike EYBL session II earned him the Most Valuable Player honor, underscoring his ability to dominate the court with a 26.3‑point average, 51.5 % field‑goal shooting and a 90.1 % free‑throw rate over a 4‑0 weekend.
Vanderbilt’s current backcourt, featuring Chandler Bing, Ethan Mgbako and Ant Brown, is expected to benefit from Thompson’s arrival, potentially turning the Commodores into a new contender in the SEC.
