A New Chapter for Women’s Soccer in Troup County
UMA FC, a soccer club based in Troup County, has announced the launch of its first semi‑professional women’s team, the Athenas, marking a milestone as the region’s inaugural such squad. The club revealed that the team is already making an impact, sitting third in the UPSL women’s league after a season that began with a narrow 5‑4 loss before a 1‑0 victory.
Guiding the new side are head coach Randy Douglas, whose résumé includes stints with a semi‑pro team in Tennessee, and assistant coach Josh Armstrong. Both bring professional experience that the club believes will help the Athenas compete at a higher level.
Building a Diverse Roster
The roster reflects a regional blend, drawing talent from Troup County as well as neighboring Chambers and Lee counties in Alabama and surrounding areas. Among the players are three former LaGrange High School standouts — Carlee Roland, Karley Perry and Reese Humphries — who have joined a group that started with 14 athletes and has since expanded to more than 20.
Training takes place at the Troup County soccer complex, while home matches are hosted at Lanett High School. Club founder Jo Howoon highlighted that the initiative was born out of a need to retain local talent, many of whom previously left the area to pursue club soccer elsewhere.
League Standings and Upcoming Match
The UPSL women’s soccer league’s inaugural season features six teams, and the Athenas are currently positioned third in the standings. Their next home fixture is scheduled for June 14 against Peaches FC at Lanett High School, an event that promises to showcase the growing strength of women’s soccer in the region.
