Tim Austing, the longtime head coach of the Sycamore High School boys basketball program, confirmed that he will step down after five seasons to assume a special assistant position at the University of Louisville.
During his tenure, Austing guided the team to two Greater Miami Conference championships and captured a Division I district title in 2025, the first for the program since 2004.
A Coach's Next Chapter
The new role will involve film analysis and scouting, tasks that align with Austing's deep understanding of the game and his collaborative spirit with head coach Pat Kelsey, with whom he shares a longstanding friendship and frequent basketball discussions.
Austing, also a social studies teacher at Sycamore, expressed the difficulty of leaving a school where he has taught and coached, noting the close‑knit community and the talented roster he helped shape.
Sycamore athletic director Andrew Ovington praised Austing's contributions, highlighting the program's 14‑14 record in the 2025‑26 season and the promise of a young, dynamic team.
Both Austing and Kelsey are alumni of Elder High School, graduating in 1992 and 1993 respectively, a shared background that has reinforced their professional bond and mutual respect.
The Sycamore coaching vacancy is expected to be posted shortly, with interviews slated to begin within the next week as the school searches for a successor to continue the program's upward trajectory.
