A Strategic Shift in Philadelphia
Mike Gansey has been appointed president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers, taking over from Daryl Morey who was dismissed on May 12. Gansey, who previously served as general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers since 2022, brings a blend of scouting acumen and executive experience to a franchise that has combined a young backcourt with veteran stars.
The front‑office reshuffle was overseen by Bob Myers, who directed the search for a new leader. Gansey’s track record includes a D‑League Executive of the Year award for the 2016‑17 season and a stint leading the Canton Charge, the Cavaliers’ affiliate. His playing background at St. Bonaventure and West Virginia gives him a player‑first perspective that he hopes will translate into better draft decisions and role‑player acquisitions.
Under Gansey’s leadership the organization will prioritize drafting, finding complementary pieces and developing talent around Joel Embiid and Paul George, both of whom are locked into large contracts. The move signals a shift toward a more collaborative approach, with Myers and other senior staff expected to work closely with the new president.
The first major test will arrive on June 23, when the NBA draft takes place. Analysts will watch closely to see which prospects Gansey and his staff target, as the Sixers look to bolster a roster that already features Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe and the emerging talents of John Clark, Shams Charania and others.
