A Homecoming for a Rebel Legend
Nick Garritano, a former UNLV placekicker and Hall of Famer, has been named the new head coach of the UNLV baseball program, bringing a distinguished coaching pedigree back to the campus where he once starred on the football field.
Garritano spent 16 years at the College of Southern Nevada, where he compiled a 632‑271 record, captured multiple conference titles and guided the Coyotes to several NJCAA World Series appearances, including state championships in 2001 and 2003.
His tenure also produced 22 Major League Baseball draft selections and eight NJCAA All‑American honorees, while his teams maintained a cumulative GPA above 3.0 in 23 of the last 24 semesters, underscoring a commitment to academic excellence.
Before his coaching career, Garritano was a two‑sport standout at Chaparral High School, earning All‑State honors in football and baseball, and later became the second‑leading scorer in UNLV history as a four‑year starting placekicker.
Garritano and his wife, Camille, are parents to son Nicky, a current member of the Rebels’ roster, and daughter Ava, completing a family that remains deeply rooted in the UNLV community.
Erick Harper’s Praise
Erick Harper, UNLV’s Director of Athletics, lauded Garritano’s legacy, stating that his proven success and personal connection to the university make him the ideal leader to elevate the program.
Chris Heavey, who served as interim director of athletics and recreation starting July 1, 2025, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the seamless transition and shared vision for the program’s future.
Garritano’s appointment signals a new chapter for UNLV baseball, one that blends competitive ambition with a steadfast focus on developing student‑athletes both on the field and in the classroom.
