The North Carolina High School Athletic Association 5A girls soccer championship concluded Tuesday night with Hickory High School securing the crown in a 2-0 win over Dixon High School. The match, played under bright lights at a packed stadium, showcased a dominant performance by the Hickory squad and a resilient effort from their opponents.
A milestone for Hickory
Hickory entered the final with an unprecedented level of anticipation, as the program had never before contested a state title match. The team finished the season with a remarkable 23-1-1 record, a testament to consistent excellence throughout the campaign.
The scoring opened in the 47th minute when Stephanie Zulueta struck first, sending a well-placed shot past the Dixon goalkeeper. The lead was doubled in the 75th minute when Piper Jillings added a second goal, sealing the victory and igniting celebrations among the Hickory faithful.
Jillings was later named Most Valuable Player, a reflection of her influence on both ends of the field. Her defensive organization and offensive contributions were pivotal in shaping the outcome of the game.
Dixon, finishing the season at 19-4-2, pushed hard in moments but could not break through Hickory’s disciplined backline. The close final score underscored the competitive balance between the two programs.
Sportsmanship recognized
The championship also highlighted exemplary conduct on the field, as Lizzie Capps of Dixon and Harper White of Hickory were honored with the Sportsmanship Award for their fair play and respectful behavior throughout the match.
