Students at Lawrence High School in Kansas found themselves with a unique opportunity when the Algerian national football team arrived in town for the FIFA World Cup.
With only a single school day to spare, the student video production team, spearheaded by senior director Liam Melendez, set out to craft a welcoming message that would capture the spirit of their community.
A Race Against the Clock
Under the guidance of biology teacher Marci Leuschen and video instructor Zach Saltz, the pupils rallied classmates from the orchestra, cheerleading squad, color guard, soccer team and the mascot Chesty Lion to appear in front of the camera.
In less than eight hours they filmed, edited and finalized the clip, a feat that senior producer Clark Barber described as “editing the video in less than a school day.”
The finished piece showcases the vibrant energy of Lawrence’s youth, from the marching band’s rhythm to the mascot’s playful antics, all stitched together with a simple yet heartfelt welcome.
Lucy Godfrey, a member of the video production class, helped gather participants and keep the schedule on track, while Aaminah Ahmed contributed to the editing process.
The video was then forwarded to the local visitor center Explore Lawrence, with the students hoping the Algerian squad feels the hospitality of Kansas and the broader United States.
Chelsea Oparaji, another student involved, expressed the wish that “the Algerian team appreciates their welcome and enjoys their stay in Lawrence, Kansas, and America.”
Beyond the immediate gesture, the project highlights how quickly young people can mobilize their talents for a cause that bridges cultures and celebrates global sport.
