After a fifteen-year absence, professional hockey is set to roar back onto the ice in Wyandotte, Michigan. The Motor City Rockers, a franchise that first fielded a team in 2020, have been granted permission to call Yack Arena their home starting next season.
A New Era for Wyandotte Hockey
City officials and the Wyandotte Downtown Development Authority sealed the agreement, a move officials say will revitalize downtown commerce and give residents a new reason to gather at the waterfront venue.
Yack Arena, a 3,000-seat multi-purpose facility, has long served the community as a hub for youth hockey, high school graduations, banquets and regional conventions. Its historic walls have witnessed countless local tournaments, and now they will host the Rockers' debut.
The team will enter the Federal Prospects Hockey League, a league that will field nineteen clubs next season, and will rekindle a storied rivalry with the Port Huron Prowlers that dates back to the early 2010s.
Team owner Ken Andrews described Wyandotte as an "anchor point of Downriver," emphasizing the city’s role as a cultural and economic touchstone for the region.
The Rockers' path to this moment has been anything but smooth. After pandemic-related shutdowns and a stint at the Big Boy Arena in Fraser, the franchise was placed on dormant status while it searched for a sustainable long-term venue. The recent approval marks the culmination of that search.
