A Strategic Reinforcement for the Net
Michigan State University’s hockey program is looking to shore up its net ahead of the 2026‑27 season, announcing a series of additions that could reshape its goaltending landscape.
The most recent commit, JJ Salajko, a 2006‑born netminder, chose the Spartans after weighing the school’s academic reputation and the prospect of competing in a high‑level program. Salajko arrives after stints with the Waterloo Black Hawks, the Watertown Shamrocks and a productive run with the Port Colborne Sailors, where he posted a 23‑12‑3 record, a 2.47 goals‑against average and a .914 save percentage.
His collegiate numbers include a 6‑7‑0 record, a .886 save percentage and a 3.78 GAA with Watertown, figures that coach Tom Anastos hopes will translate into greater consistency between the pipes.
Between the pipes, the Spartans will also welcome Joshua Ravensbergen, a first‑round selection of the NHL, who is expected to start the majority of games. Ravensbergen’s elite skating and reflexes give the coaching staff a reliable option for the opening lineup.
Competing for the backup role is Quentin Sigurdson, a transfer from Northeastern who brings a track record of steady play and a willingness to push the starter for minutes.
The move follows the departure of Trey Augustine, the previous starter, who signed a professional contract with the Detroit Red Wings, and Melvin Strahl, the former backup, who transferred to the University of Minnesota. Both exits opened up opportunities for younger talent.
Meanwhile, third‑string goalie Dolan Gilbert entered the transfer portal but has yet to find a new destination, leaving the Spartans with a depth chart that now includes three distinct options.
