Alexandros Samodurov, a 6‑foot‑11 forward from Greece, announced his commitment to the University of North Carolina on Wednesday, choosing the Tar Heels over a handful of other suitors. The announcement marks the second international prospect to join UNC’s recruiting class this offseason, underscoring the program’s expanding global reach.
A Championship‑Laced Resume
Samodurov has been a mainstay for Panathinaikos since 2022, helping the club capture the Greek League title and the EuroLeague championship in 2024, followed by additional domestic and European trophies in the subsequent seasons. His contributions were not limited to team success; he consistently posted career‑high minutes and production during the 2025‑26 campaign, establishing himself as a reliable interior presence.
On the international stage, Samodurov earned All‑Star honors at the 2025 FIBA U‑20 Eurobasket, where he averaged 17.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. He also logged stints with Greece’s senior national team, contributing 4.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per appearance.
A Familiar Face in Chapel Hill
Samodurov will not be arriving alone. His former teammate at Panathinaikos, Neoklis Avdalas, signed with UNC earlier in the offseason after transferring from Virginia Tech. The two players share a history that dates back to their junior years, a connection that could accelerate Samodurov’s adjustment to life in Chapel Hill.
Coach Hubert Davis expressed enthusiasm about the new additions, noting that the blend of size, experience and international pedigree should fortify the team’s frontcourt depth. “We’re excited to welcome Alexandros and Sayon Keita,” Davis said. “Their professional backgrounds and competitive fire align perfectly with our ambitions.”
