A new athletic direction for Albany State
Albany State University announced that its women's soccer program will be discontinued beginning with the 2026‑27 academic year. The decision, endorsed by the University System of Georgia, reflects a comprehensive review of the school's athletic portfolio and seeks to align resources with long‑term sustainability.
Conference considerations played a central role. The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference does not sponsor women's soccer, forcing institutions that field soccer teams to operate as independents or secure affiliate arrangements. By adding indoor track and field, Albany State gains a sport that dovetails more directly with the SIAC's competitive structure.
University President Dr. Robert Scott emphasized that the realignment is about more than finances; it is about positioning the athletics department for future growth. Athletics Director Dr. Kristene Kelly acknowledged the impact on current student‑athletes and outlined plans for academic support, compliance guidance, and assistance with NCAA transfer pathways.
The upcoming 2026‑27 season will see Albany State sponsor 12 varsity sports, including the new indoor track programs for both men and women. Scholarship commitments for current women's soccer athletes will be honored through the transition year, ensuring continuity of education and athletic opportunities.
This restructuring is part of a broader strategic review of the university's athletic offerings, aiming to balance competitive participation with institutional priorities while maintaining compliance with NCAA regulations.
