The International Ice Hockey Federation announced that the blanket suspension of Russia from its international calendar for the 2026‑27 season has been removed, allowing the federation to consider Russian teams on a tournament‑by‑tournament basis.
The decision followed an appeal by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation and a review by the IIHF Disciplinary Board, which concluded that the original risk assessment did not provide enough specific justification to maintain a full‑season exclusion.
Case‑by‑Case Evaluation Takes Shape
Under the new framework, the council will assess each competition individually, weighing factors such as venue readiness, anti‑doping compliance and geopolitical risk before issuing participation permits.
The move comes just one day after the IIHF reinstated Belarus for several events next season, highlighting a broader shift toward evaluating each nation’s eligibility on a case‑by‑case basis.
While the IIHF and the Russian Ministry of Sport have clarified that this does not amount to an automatic return for Russia, they emphasized that every tournament will be judged independently, taking into account security, logistical and regulatory considerations.
Each event, from the World Junior Championship scheduled for December to the 2027 World Championship, will now be examined on its own merits, ensuring that participation decisions are based on concrete operational and sporting plans rather than a blanket ban.
