A Standout Commitment
Charles Butler, a 6‑foot‑6, 330‑pound offensive lineman from Bishop Canevin High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, announced his commitment to Rutgers University during an official visit this weekend.
The Scarlet Knights offered Butler on May 12, making them the first Power Four program to extend an invitation to the Pittsburgh native.
Offensive line coach Jim Turner, who was present during the visit, praised Butler’s size and mobility, stating that the lineman is ready to compete at the Big Ten level.
Weighing His Options
Butler had scheduled official visits to Temple and James Madison but decided against taking them, focusing instead on the environment he felt at Rutgers.
He also held offers from UConn, Kent State, Liberty and Marshall, but the combination of academic reputation, campus culture and the university’s family‑oriented slogan resonated most strongly.
During his spring trip to New Brunswick, Butler was impressed by the facilities, the stadium and the overall atmosphere, which he described as a perfect fit for his personal and athletic goals.
A Family‑Like Future
Butler highlighted the FTC — Family, Trust, CHOP — philosophy that Rutgers promotes, saying he wants to be part of a program that values camaraderie and collective growth.
He also expressed confidence in the support network of staff and alumni, which he believes will aid his development both on and off the field.
Coach Turner echoed the sentiment, noting that Butler’s addition strengthens the offensive line and aligns with the team’s long‑term vision.
