Peyton Whitted Takes the reins of Westminster Women’s Basketball

A seasoned player turned coach brings global experience and academic focus to the program

Westminster College announced this week that Peyton Whitted will lead the women's basketball team, following a nationwide search that highlighted her blend of on‑court success and commitment to academic excellence.

A Global Playing résumé

Whitted's basketball journey began at North Gwinnett High School in Georgia, where she earned all‑state honors and was nominated for the McDonald’s All‑American Game after guiding her team to a state runner‑up finish. At Penn State University she helped the Nittany Lions reach the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, collected Academic All‑Big Ten recognition, and served as team captain while completing her degree.

After college, Whitted turned professional, competing from 2017 through 2025 in leagues across Europe and Southeast Asia. Her stints in Greece, Romania, Sweden, Spain, Turkey, Belgium, Italy, Indonesia and the Czech Republic were marked by Eurobasket All‑Belgian League second‑team honors and a Turkish TKBL second‑team selection. Internationally, she represented Indonesia, contributing to a gold‑medal performance at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games.

From Player to Mentor

Retiring from playing, Whitted moved into coaching, first at North Gwinnett High School where she oversaw junior varsity and freshman squads before assisting the varsity team. She also spent time with ATL Bucks AAU Basketball and ran youth camps for the Atlanta Hawks, experiences that sharpened her ability to connect with today's student‑athletes and navigate the evolving landscape of women's basketball.

Dr. Jessica Brown, who chairs the search committee, said the appointment reflects a desire for a leader who can uphold Westminster's championship culture while advancing both academic standards and athletic ambition within the SLIAC conference.

The program Whitted now oversees has a storied history, boasting five regular‑season SLIAC titles and three conference tournament championships, as well as producing two All‑Americans and two postgraduate scholarship recipients. With her extensive playing and coaching background, Whitted is positioned to blend competitive drive with a developmental mindset, aiming to elevate the team's profile on and off the court.
