A Day of Play and Purpose
On a bright Saturday morning, the gymnasium of Danville Area Community College transformed into a hub of energy as over 160 high school students laced up their sneakers for the sixth iteration of the Anti-Violence Basketball Tournament hosted by Mosaic City Church.
The event, now a staple of the local summer calendar, blends competitive play with workshops on conflict resolution, aiming to steer young people toward constructive outlets and stronger community ties.
Pastor Lestan Hoskins’ Vision
Pastor Lestan Hoskins, who has led Mosaic City Church for more than a decade, took the microphone to underscore the tournament’s broader mission. “Our goal is to build relationships with these young men and women before they ever face a crossroads,” he said, highlighting mentorship programs that extend beyond the court.
By pairing each game with conversations about decision-making and personal responsibility, the church hopes to reduce the incidence of youth-involved violence that has plagued parts of the city. Participants, many of whom travel from neighboring towns, expressed appreciation for the positive environment.
Organizers say the tournament will continue to expand, with plans to incorporate life-skills seminars and scholarship opportunities for standout athletes who demonstrate commitment both on and off the court.
