Rutgers Secures Commitment from Florida Safety Zion Watson
Rutgers football has landed a verbal commitment from Zion Watson, a three‑star safety out of Northside Christian in Florida. The versatile defender also excels on the track, particularly in the 4×100 relay, and brings a blend of size, speed, and playmaking ability to the Scarlet Knights' secondary.
Watson's recruitment journey was shaped by a connection with Rutgers defensive coordinator Travis Johansen, who first offered him in April. After a weekend visit that included a tour of the facilities and a meeting with the coaching staff, Watson weighed offers from Army, Navy, UNLV and Samford before deciding on the Big Ten program.
In high school, Watson caught 45 passes for 1,036 yards and 11 touchdowns, showcasing his ability to stretch the field and find the end zone. His track achievements add another dimension, as his speed could translate into coverage and return specialist roles at the collegiate level.
The commitment marks a significant milestone for Rutgers, as Watson becomes the first recruit from Florida in the 2027 class and the fourth defensive player to join the roster, joining Josiah Sturdivant, Trent Buttles and Moses Poku‑Kankam. Head coach Greg Schiano has increasingly targeted Florida talent in recent recruiting cycles, and this pledge underscores the program's growing appeal.
Watson's addition is expected to bolster the Scarlet Knights' defensive depth and provide a dynamic playmaker who can contribute immediately on special teams. As the class continues to take shape, his commitment signals Rutgers' intent to compete aggressively for top talent across the country.
