Rutgers Secures Commitment from 2027 Offensive Lineman Aaron Southard

Virginia prospect chooses Scarlet Knights after impressive workout and campus visit

Rutgers football announced the verbal commitment of Aaron Southard, a 6‑foot‑5, 300‑pound offensive tackle from Saint James Academy in Madison, Virginia, to the Class of 2027. The pledge marks a significant addition to the Scarlet Knights’ front line as they look to bolster their interior play.

Southard brings a rare combination of size and athleticism, clocking a 5.8‑second 40‑yard dash while bench‑pressing 315 pounds, squatting 465 pounds and deadlifting 535 pounds. Those numbers have drawn attention from several programs, but it was his performance in front of new offensive line coach Jim Turner that proved pivotal.

A workout that sealed the deal

In late March, Southard worked out for Turner, who had only recently joined the program. The session gave the coach a clear view of the prospect’s raw power and coachability, prompting an offer that was extended shortly thereafter. An unofficial visit to the New Brunswick campus followed, where Southard observed spring practice and got a feel for the team culture.

The recruitment narrative took another twist when Michigan State intensified its pursuit, but Southard ultimately decided to shut down his other visits and focus on Rutgers. A month after the visit, he formally committed, becoming the ninth member of the 2027 class and the third offensive lineman to do so, joining New York interior lineman James Cocozzo and Pennsylvania tackle Charles Butler.

Though unranked by the major recruiting services, Southard’s combination of physical tools and proven work ethic has already raised expectations among the coaching staff. His commitment not only adds depth to the line but also signals a continued upward trajectory for the Scarlet Knights’ recruiting efforts in the Commonwealth.
