A community legacy on the court
Tucson officials cut the ribbon this week on a brand‑new basketball complex at Palo Verde Park, dedicating the space to Judith "Mama" Blair, the mother of former University of Arizona star Joseph Blair and longtime supporter of women's athletics.
The facility, built with modern LED lighting, protective shade canopies and sturdy bleacher seating, meets the growing demand for safe, accessible sports venues in the region.
Joseph Blair, who enjoyed a distinguished career as a University of Arizona player before transitioning to NBA coaching, spoke at the ceremony about the personal significance of the court, noting that his mother would have cherished such a venue during an era when female sports opportunities were scarce.
Beyond honoring a family matriarch, the courts will serve as the official home court for the Kellond Elementary School basketball team, providing young athletes with a professional‑grade playing surface.
City leaders say the project reflects a broader commitment to expanding recreational infrastructure and fostering inclusive sports programs for all ages.
