Maddie Baehr, a recent graduate of Braden River High School, has earned a spot on the Ireland Women’s National Flag Football Team, a selection that will take her from the Gulf Coast of Florida to the emerald hills of County Cork and the bustling streets of Amsterdam.
Heritage Meets Sport
Born to a family with deep Irish roots, Baehr discovered her eligibility through her maternal grandmother’s immigration story, a connection that opened doors to tryouts in Dublin and ultimately a place on the squad.
The invitation arrived after a family contact reached out to the Irish coaching staff, leading Baehr to travel to Ireland for a brief visit with relatives before joining the team in the Netherlands for a friendly tournament against Sweden and the host Dutch side.
Baehr’s athletic résumé reads like a double‑sport star: she earned an honorable mention as an All‑State defender in flag football and was recognized as a Herald‑Tribune All‑Area soccer midfielder, a testament to her versatility and competitive drive. She has committed to play soccer at McNeese State University, where she will continue to develop her skills on the collegiate stage.
The upcoming matches in Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium will pit Ireland against Sweden and the Netherlands in a series of exhibition games designed to sharpen tactics and foster international camaraderie. For Baehr, the experience is as much about showcasing her talent as it is about immersing herself in the culture that has shaped her family narrative.
Reflecting on the journey, Baehr expressed enthusiasm for the chance to connect with her Irish heritage, to meet fellow diaspora members, and to bring a piece of her Florida upbringing to the international stage. Her story underscores how sport can bridge continents, generations, and personal identity.
