Saugatuck High School’s girls soccer and baseball squads both stood atop their respective district ladders this week, each securing a decisive victory over Black River.
The soccer team edged the Wolves 2‑1 in a tightly contested final, while the baseball squad routed Black River 16‑1 in just three innings, showcasing the depth of talent on both sides of the campus.
Looking ahead to the regional stage
Both programs will now travel to face new opponents. The soccer team is slated to meet St. Joseph Western Michigan Lutheran in the regional semifinals, while the baseball team draws Kalamazoo Christian in the Division 3 regional round.
Other area teams saw mixed fortunes in their district contests. West Ottawa fell 5‑4 to Jenison in the Division 1 baseball semifinals, and Zeeland West dropped a 9‑4 decision to Hudsonville in the same round.
Holland’s baseball side posted a 1‑0 win over Holland Christian in the semifinals but could not repeat the magic against Unity Christian, who posted an 11‑1 victory in the finals.
Unity Christian also prevailed in the other District 2 semifinal, defeating Hamilton 5‑2 in eight innings. The Hawks’ pitcher, Bella Goetsch, turned in a perfect game to silence Holland in the Division 2 semifinals, though the team ultimately lost 7‑3 in the championship match.
In softball, Hudsonville captured the Division 1 district title with a 9‑4 win over Grandville, while Zeeland West’s softball team saw a 6‑4 loss to the same opponent in the semifinals. Fennville’s softball squad earned a 1‑0 forfeit victory over Delton Kellogg before bowing out 11‑1 to Covenant Christian in the finals.
The recent flurry of results underscores a competitive spirit across the Holland‑area schools, with multiple teams advancing deep into state‑level play and several standout performances highlighted by perfect games and dominant pitching.
