The DeWitt Panthers captured a decisive district championship on Tuesday, blanking Grand Ledge 3-0 in a game that showcased the team’s resilience and pitching dominance.
A Pitcher’s Masterclass
Junior right-hander Joseph Zubal delivered a complete-game shutout, scattering six hits while striking out a key batter in the seventh inning and inducing two pop-ups to seal the victory.
Coach Alan Shankel, who has watched the squad tumble early in the season, called the performance “absolutely money,” noting that the team’s early-season setbacks only sharpened their focus.
The offense finally clicked in the fourth inning when an RBI single brought the first run across the plate, and the momentum built through a two-out RBI single from senior shortstop Jake Smith in the sixth, which pushed the lead to 3-0.
After a disappointing loss in the Diamond Classic quarterfinal the previous week, the Panthers have turned a slow start into a surge of confidence, playing their best baseball when it matters most.
Looking Ahead to the Regionals
DeWitt will now travel to Mason High School on June 3 at 5 p.m. to meet the Mason Panthers in the regional semifinals, a matchup that promises another tight contest.
Coach Shankel emphasized that the team is entering the next round with a belief that they can continue to generate runs when needed and rely on Zubal’s poise on the mound.
