Women’s flag football is accelerating toward varsity status in college athletics, with the NCAA officially adding the sport to its Emerging Sports for Women program earlier this year and the International Olympic Committee confirming its inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Conferences Eye Varsity Expansion
The Atlantic Coast Conference has opened preliminary talks about sponsoring the sport, while the Big 12 aims to field six varsity teams by 2028 and the Big South will launch a full season in 2027. Nebraska’s recent announcement makes it the first Power 4 school to commit to a varsity program, marking a milestone for the growing discipline.
Club programs already exist at nine ACC institutions, and the Fiesta Sports Foundation recently hosted a national championship tournament in Arizona, showcasing the competitive depth. Clemson athletic director Graham Neff voiced optimism that the momentum will translate into broader conference sponsorship.
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, whose conference oversees 15 women’s sports — the most in the Power 4 — said additional discussions are expected as the landscape evolves.
