A Setback for the Vols
Former Tennessee Volunteers assistant coach Doug Matthews went on air during 104.5 The Zone’s Big Orange Sunday to confirm that sophomore edge rusher Chaz Coleman has been dismissed from the program.
Coleman had been slated to start at the EDGE position for the Vols, a role he earned after a promising stint at Penn State where he played under new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.
His departure comes after he missed the bulk of spring practice because of personal issues, and the coaching staff was unable to keep him on the roster despite attempts to do so.
In a move that surprised many, Tennessee reportedly restructured Coleman’s scholarship agreement, reducing the upfront financial commitment, but the adjustment does not restore his eligibility to transfer to another school this fall.
Unless Coleman can exploit a loophole, he will be barred from joining another program for the upcoming season, underscoring the limited options for players in similar situations.
Coleman’s arrival had been heralded as one of the most high‑profile transfers of the offseason, with the Vols beating out Ohio State for his signature, a fact that highlights the competitive nature of the recruiting market.
Matthews’ announcement has not yet been corroborated by other media outlets, leaving the full scope of the dismissal open to interpretation until further confirmation arrives.
