A renewed focus on elite high school competition
The Massachusetts Intercollegiate Athletic Association, known as the MIAA, has voted to bring back Division 1A championships in baseball and boys’ ice hockey, and to create a new championship for girls’ hockey beginning in the 2027 season
Baseball will feature an eight-team bracket at Polar Park, with all six championship games scheduled on the same venue. Teams will qualify through power rankings that span the five divisions, and the tournament will open with a best-of-three series that guarantees each squad a home game
Hockey’s comeback and new formats
Ice hockey will return for the 2027-28 season, using a pool-play format followed by semifinals that involve the top four teams based on record. The structure mirrors the baseball model but adds three opening games for each team
The realignment also predicts a shift in division counts: boys’ hockey is expected to move from four to three divisions, while girls’ hockey may consolidate from two to a single division. Despite these changes, the MIAA anticipates that six title games will still be held at the TD Garden
Looking back at the past
Historical context shows that the boys’ Super 8 hockey tournament ran from 1991 to 2020 before a four-year pause aimed at equity considerations, and baseball championships were held from 2014 to 2019
The decision reflects a broader effort to streamline competition while preserving tradition, and it was supported by a 20-3 vote with limited discussion among board members
