Rutgers University’s football program announced that its 2027 recruiting class has swelled to 13 athletes after a weekend of official visits that produced multiple pledges.
A developmental philosophy
Coach Greg Schiano has long championed a model that prioritizes high school athletes, allowing them to grow within the Scarlet Knights system rather than relying on the transfer portal.
Among the new faces is Zion Vilma, a three‑star prospect from Florida whose name is familiar to Rutgers fans as the cousin of former NFL linebacker Jonathan Vilma, a player Schiano once recruited at Miami.
Vilma chose the Scarlet Knights over a slate of suitors that included Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Mississippi State and Iowa State, underscoring the appeal of Rutgers’ developmental pathway.
The class also features Florida athlete Zion Watson, the lone Florida‑based commit, who contributed to a fifth‑place finish in the 4×100 relay at the state championships.
In the trenches, the Scarlet Knights secured the signatures of three offensive linemen: Charles Butler, a 6‑foot‑6, 330‑pound powerhouse from Pittsburgh; Aaron Southard, a 6‑foot‑5, 300‑pound tackle from Virginia; and Jackson Albright, a 6‑foot‑5, 315‑pound lineman from Pennsylvania.
Adding depth on the defensive edge, Josiah Sturdivant, a 6‑foot‑4, 225‑pound prospect from North Carolina, rounds out the group.
Schiano’s approach reflects a broader philosophy that values long‑term growth, a contrast to programs that frequently tap the transfer market for immediate impact.
The commitments illustrate a recruiting strategy that blends regional talent from the Mid‑Atlantic and the Southeast, while also reaching into traditional hotbeds such as Florida.
