The longtime international player reflects on Olympic experiences, leadership, and the future of Welsh hockey.

A career defined by longevity and leadership

After more than ten years of service and two Olympic campaigns, Rupert Shipperley has called time on his international hockey career, bringing to a close a chapter that saw him represent both Wales and Great Britain on the world stage.

Shipperley first broke onto the senior stage for Wales on 13 May 2014, quickly becoming one of the most capped Welsh players in history, amassing over 150 appearances for both Wales and Great Britain.

His Olympic résumé includes a debut at Tokyo 2020 and a quarter‑final run with Great Britain at Paris 2024, where the team’s campaign ended in the latter stage.

Clubwise, the Welsh forward concluded his playing days with Hampstead & Westminster, a fixture in the Men’s England Hockey League, where he contributed to several championship‑winning squads.

In a heartfelt retirement address, Shipperley thanked teammates, coaches and supporters, describing the privilege of representing his country as a highlight of his life.

Hockey Wales chief executive Paul Whapham praised the veteran’s leadership, consistency and professionalism, noting that his example has inspired a new generation of players across Wales.

GB men’s head coach Zak Jones added that Shipperley’s infectious enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the game have left an indelible mark on the development of the national side.
