Alex Bowman, the 30‑year‑old driver for Hendrick Motorsports, has been forced to confront a hidden health challenge that has reshaped his 2024 season.
The condition, diagnosed as vertigo, manifested as a spinning sensation, dizziness and nausea, leading the team to withdraw him from the schedule at Phoenix, Las Vegas, Darlington and Nashville.
Bowman, who boasts more than 360 Cup Series starts and has been a full‑time fixture for Hendrick since 2018, missed five events in 2022 after a concussion and three more in 2023 following a broken back, the latter requiring a minor surgical procedure to address lingering balance issues.
A comeback built on therapy and resolve
Despite the setbacks, the driver has shown measurable improvement, posting two top‑five finishes and climbing to 32nd in the points standings after a 33rd‑place result at Nashville, a race that also featured a collision with Bubba Wallace’s No. 23 Toyota.
With 12 races remaining, Bowman is focused on securing enough points to qualify for the playoffs, a goal that now feels within reach after he began a regimen of physical therapy aimed at preventing a recurrence of the vertigo episodes.
The experience underscores the fragile nature of competition at the highest level, where even a brief bout of dizziness can alter a driver’s entire campaign, but Bowman’s determination to return to the cockpit remains undiminished.
