A Legendary Tenure Ends
Steve DiPatri, the winningest coach in South Jersey basketball history, announced his resignation from Wildwood Catholic after a 13‑year run that produced 20‑plus victories in 11 seasons and a Cape‑Atlantic League championship game appearance last winter.
DiPatri’s decision comes after a storied career that began at Sacred Heart Academy in Vineland, where he amassed 352 wins and captured two NJSIAA Non‑Public B state titles before moving on to lead Wildwood Catholic, Bridgeton, Collingswood, Gloucester Catholic, Camden Catholic and Haddon Township programs as an assistant or head coach.
At Wildwood Catholic, DiPatri guided the Warriors to a 20‑9 record last season and a league title game, finishing with 619 career victories that place him fifth in South Jersey history and 16th among all New Jersey coaches.
The coach also retained longtime assistant Fran St. John, a move that underscores continuity within the program. DiPatri’s successor will inherit a culture built on sustained excellence and community engagement.
Lisa Gedaka of Gloucester Catholic currently tops the region with 759 wins, a benchmark that DiPatri narrowly missed surpassing. His impact, however, reverberates across the schools he has served, from Sacred Heart Academy to the various municipal programs listed in the local sports archives.
Beyond the win column, DiPatri’s influence extends to player development and community outreach. His tenure at Wildwood Catholic was marked by academic achievement, character building, and a commitment to fostering talent that could compete at the next level.
The basketball community will watch closely as the school searches for a replacement, with names like Dave Troiano, Chris Palladino and Tom Mulligan mentioned in local media as potential candidates to continue the program’s legacy.
Wildwood Catholic, a fixture in the Cape‑Atlantic League, will look to maintain its competitive edge while honoring the foundation laid by DiPatri. The organization’s official website, wildwoodcatholic.org, will likely post updates on the transition in the coming weeks.
