The America East and Metro Conferences have unveiled the schedule for their first ever America East‑Metro Basketball Challenge, a collaborative series that will run across the first week of November 2026. The initiative marks a strategic partnership between two of the Northeast’s most storied Division I leagues, aiming to increase exposure, deepen regional rivalries and provide a structured competitive outlet for member institutions.
A Northeast Basketball Showcase
Nine men’s programs and nine women’s programs from each league will meet in a double‑header format, with each team hosting one game and traveling for the other, creating a balanced slate of 18 match‑ups over four days. Games are slated to take place from Thursday, Nov. 5 through Sunday, Nov. 8, 2026, offering fans a compact but intense burst of basketball action.
The Canisius Golden Griffins women’s basketball team is slated to open its participation on Thursday, November 5, when they travel to face the University of New Hampshire Wildcats. The Griffs will then return home on Sunday, November 8, to host the UMass‑Lowell River Hawks at the Koessler Athletic Center, concluding their two‑game stretch in the Challenge.
That opening contest will mark the fourth meeting in the series history between Canisius and New Hampshire, a rivalry that dates back to the 1993‑94 season. Two of the previous three games were played in Durham, New Hampshire, adding a layer of familiarity for the Griffs and underscoring the longstanding connection between the programs.
The series is part of a two‑year agreement covering the 2026‑27 and 2027‑28 seasons, representing the first basketball challenge ever staged between two Division I conferences rooted in the Northeast. Both the America East and Metro Conferences have long histories of competitive athletics, with the America East founded in 1979 and the Metro Conference celebrating its 45th year of competition in the 2025‑26 academic year.
Current Metro Conference members include institutions such as Canisius University, Fairfield University and Iona University, underscoring the league’s regional footprint. The collaboration highlights a strategic effort to increase exposure, enhance scheduling stability and foster cross‑conference rivalries that benefit student‑athletes and fans alike.
Fans across the Northeast can look forward to a packed November of high‑stakes matchups, as the Challenge promises competitive games, travel excitement and a showcase of talent from some of the region’s most storied programs.
