His condition deteriorated on May 20, when a 911 call prompted his rushed transport to a Charlotte hospital; he was reported to be coughing up blood and struggling for breath.
NASCAR announced his passing the following day, attributing the cause to bacterial pneumonia and sepsis, and the news was met with an outpouring of grief from fans, teammates, and rivals alike.
