Northeast Basketball Leagues Unveil Inaugural 2026 Challenge
The America East Conference and the Metro Conference announced on Tuesday the first ever America East‑Metro Basketball Challenge, a slate of games that will pit member schools against one another across the Northeast in the 2026 season. The partnership brings together two Division I leagues that share a geographic footprint, a broadcast partner in ESPN, and a joint sponsorship arrangement with Van Wagner. The initiative is designed to increase regional exposure and provide fans with a concentrated schedule of high‑profile matchups.
Manhattan College’s men’s basketball team will open the challenge on November 5, 2026, when the Jaspers travel to Draddy Gymnasium to face the Great Danes of the University at Albany. A second contest follows on November 8, 2026, at Skip Chappelle Court in Memorial Gym, where the Jaspers will host the Bears of the University of Maine. Both venues are steeped in basketball tradition, with Draddy Gymnasium known for its intimate atmosphere and Memorial Gym celebrated for its historic home‑court advantage.
The series marks several first‑time encounters. While Manhattan has faced Albany four times previously, the most recent meeting on November 16, 2020 resulted in a 57‑51 victory for the Jaspers. In contrast, the upcoming game against Maine will be the first meeting between the two programs, adding a fresh narrative to the schedule. Head Coach John Gallagher, who has guided the Jaspers for several seasons, brings a 20‑4 record against the Bears, highlighted by a 75‑65 win on February 16, 2022. Gallagher’s overall ledger against Albany stands at 10‑16, reflecting a competitive but challenging history.
The challenge also revives a recent rivalry with America East opposition. The Jaspers’ last encounter with an America East team came during the 2023‑24 campaign against Bryant University, a game that contributed to the team’s developmental arc. By scheduling games against both Albany and Maine, the Manhattan program aims to test its depth early in the season and build momentum for the conference slate.
Beyond the on‑court action, the partnership underscores a broader collaboration that includes shared marketing rights, coordinated promotional events, and a joint commitment to growing basketball in the Northeast. The games will be televised on ESPN, giving the schools national visibility and providing fans with a streamlined viewing experience across the region.
