A Data‑Driven Approach to Team Building
Memphis Tigers head coach Penny Hardaway recently introduced a personality assessment from Profile to better understand the communication and leadership styles of his roster, his coaching staff, and himself.
The test was administered to every member of the program, providing a snapshot of individual traits and how they align with the team's objectives. Hardaway discovered that his own profile reflects a strong caring nature, prompting him to reevaluate certain priorities.
Armed with these insights, Hardaway emphasized the importance of sacrifice, teamwork, and a shared commitment to the community. He openly acknowledged past missteps and outlined a plan to reshape the program's culture toward greater cohesion.
The approach has already yielded tangible results: 13 of the 14 scholarship players reported to campus early for summer workouts, and a virtual group chat that includes coaches and athletes has remained lively and engaging for more than a month.
Point guard Jayden Reid is expected to join the squad shortly, further bolstering the roster as the team prepares for the upcoming season. Hardaway's focus on building a group that cares for one another reflects his broader vision of success both on and off the court.
