A repeat contender
Carson Tinney, a junior catcher for the University of Texas, has once again been recognized as one of the five finalists for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award. The honor marks his second straight year among the nation's top collegiate catchers, underscoring his sustained excellence and consistency.
Tinney’s impact extends far beyond the defensive side of the ball. At the plate he leads the Longhorns with a 1.198 OPS, has smashed 21 home runs and driven in 56 runs across 56 games this season. His .997 fielding percentage reflects a steady glove that has helped Texas maintain some of the nation’s most impressive pitching metrics.
The award ceremony will be held live at the Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, on June 13, 2026. Joining Tinney among the finalists are standout backstops from Florida Gulf Coast, Auburn, Georgia and Georgia Tech, each vying for the nation’s most coveted catcher accolade.
Texas has a rich history with the award, and Tinney now stands as the third player from the program to be named a finalist, a testament to the school’s ongoing production of elite catching talent. His presence has also propelled the Longhorns to rank 15th nationally in ERA and among the top five in WHIP and FIP, highlighting his all‑around influence on the team’s success.
More than numbers
Beyond the statistics, Tinney’s leadership has shaped the clubhouse culture and guided younger pitchers through high‑pressure moments. Teammates and coaches alike credit his preparation, work ethic and ability to call a game as intangible forces that have helped the staff post a 3.29 FIP and a 1.21 WHIP, figures that place Texas among the nation’s most effective pitching staffs.
As the Longhorns gear up for the final stretch of the season, Tinney’s focus remains on contributing to a championship run. Whether it’s delivering a clutch hit, framing a tough pitch or mentoring a freshman arm, his presence continues to shape Texas baseball’s narrative heading into the 2026 College World Series.
