Holdrege celebrated the completion of a $3.7 million youth baseball and softball complex that now boasts four well‑maintained fields, modern restrooms, a spacious concession stand and reliable Wi‑Fi. The facility, built on a site that began construction in 2018, is designed to host multiple games and practices simultaneously, giving local families and traveling teams a modern venue for competition and recreation.
Funding the Vision
The project’s financing reflects a collaborative effort among local entities. The Phelps County Development Corporation contributes $75,000 annually for 15 years, amounting to $1.125 million from LB840 sales‑tax funds. An additional $250,000 came from the Phelps County Community Foundation, while the remaining costs were covered by the city’s parks and recreation budget, ensuring a diversified financial base that reduces reliance on any single source.
State‑of‑the‑art amenities set the complex apart. In addition to the four fields, the site features contemporary restroom facilities, a large concession area that can serve spectators, and high‑speed Wi‑Fi, allowing organizers to stream games and keep statistics online. These features make the venue attractive not only for local leagues but also for regional tournaments that bring visitors and their spending to Holdrege.
Community Impact and Ongoing Use
Since opening, the complex has already hosted events such as an 11U Titans baseball tournament organized by SPYAC and a girls’ softball tournament coordinated by Samantha Minnick, president of SPYAC and a 12U softball coach. The YMCA also uses the fields for its youth rec leagues, and a shared Google document helps both the YMCA and SPYAC manage practice and game schedules. Plans for a YMCA church‑league softball season later this summer further illustrate the venue’s growing role in the community.
Local families have expressed enthusiasm for the new opportunities. Colby Larson, whose son participates in the league, highlighted the complex’s potential to attract higher‑level tournaments and generate economic activity for Holdrege. With continued cooperation among local organizations and sustained investment in youth sports, the facility is positioned to become a lasting asset for the town’s families, businesses and future.
