Virginia Tech’s men’s basketball program has received a new commitment that could reshape its frontcourt for the upcoming season.
A versatile wing with a global background
Eltayeb Eltayeb, a 6‑foot‑8 wing of Sudanese descent, announced his pledge to the Hokies after a standout prep career at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kansas.
During his senior season he posted averages of 21.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and shot better than 43 percent from three‑point range, numbers that placed him among the most efficient scorers in his class.
Coach Mike Young highlighted the player’s guard‑like skill set and noted that Eltayeb has added more than seven inches since entering high school, a growth spurt that has turned him into a more imposing presence on the paint.
The coaching staff projects him as a potential redshirt for the 2026‑27 campaign, a move intended to bulk up his frame and allow him to compete at the collegiate level.
He will not be the only newcomer; the Hokies have also welcomed six transfers from the portal, including Kuol Atak, a 6‑foot‑9 sharpshooter who previously played at Oklahoma.
Atak, who measures 6‑foot‑9 and 192 pounds, is known for his outside shooting and shares a similar physical profile to Eltayeb, suggesting a complementary dynamic in the frontcourt.
The influx of talent reflects Virginia Tech’s aggressive recruiting strategy, blending high‑school prospects with experienced portal acquisitions as the program looks to climb the ACC rankings.
