A Strategic Expansion
The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) revealed that it will welcome two new franchises for the 2026‑27 season, one based in Las Vegas and the other in Hamilton, Ontario. The decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of market potential, fan engagement and the broader ambition to cement women’s hockey as a professional staple.
Distinctive Branding
Las Vegas’s team will adopt a green and gold palette drawn from the hues of the Southern Nevada desert, while Hamilton’s squad will showcase gold, maroon and cream, a nod to the city’s industrial heritage and sporting tradition.
The Las Vegas franchise is slated to call the T‑Mobile Arena home, the same venue that hosts the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights, a partnership that underscores the city’s deepening connection to hockey culture. Across the border, the Hamilton team will play at the historic TD Coliseum, a venue with a storied past in Canadian basketball and hockey.
The league currently fields clubs in Boston, Minnesota, Montréal, New York, Ottawa, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver, and will welcome Detroit alongside Las Vegas and Hamilton in the upcoming season. This expansion reflects a strategic push to embed the sport in diverse North American markets while leveraging existing fan bases and infrastructure.
Both new cities were selected for their demonstrated support of women’s hockey at the grassroots level and their willingness to invest in the growth of the sport. Las Vegas’s rapid emergence as a sports destination and Hamilton’s strong participation rates in girls’ and women’s hockey were cited as decisive factors in the league’s final choice.
The addition of these teams not only broadens the competitive landscape but also signals a cultural shift toward greater visibility and investment in women’s professional sports. As the league prepares for its next chapter, the upcoming season promises to showcase a blend of established excellence and fresh talent on a national stage.
